Frequently asked questions

FAQ

What taxes are deducted from a US paycheck?

A typical US paycheck deducts federal income tax (based on IRS brackets), Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), and state income tax. Some cities and counties also levy local income taxes — this calculator does not include those.

What is FICA?

FICA stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It funds Social Security (6.2% on wages up to $184,500 in 2026) and Medicare (1.45% on all wages, plus 0.9% on high earners). Both the employee and employer pay each of these rates — so the combined Social Security rate is 12.4% total.

Why might my actual withholding differ from this estimate?

This calculator applies 2026 IRS brackets to annualized gross pay minus the standard deduction. Actual withholding depends on your W-4 elections, other income sources, itemized deductions, and pre-tax benefits like 401(k) contributions or health insurance premiums, which reduce your taxable income.

Which states have no income tax?

In 2026, nine states levy no individual income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. The calculator shows 0% for these states automatically — residents keep more of each paycheck.

Is the state income tax rate accurate?

The pre-filled rate is each state's top marginal rate for 2026 (source: Tax Foundation). Most people pay a lower effective rate because state income taxes are also progressive in most states. Adjust the rate field to match your actual bracket, or use it as a worst-case estimate.
