Calculate your Einkommensteuer and Solidaritätszuschlag for 2025 using the exact §32a EStG progressive formula. Social insurance contributions included.
| Zone | Taxable income (z) | Marginal rate | Formula |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — Zero | ≤ €12,096 | 0% | €0 |
| 2 — Progressive start | €12,097 – €17,005 | 14% → ~24% | (974·y + 1,400)·y · where y = (z − 12,096)/10,000 |
| 3 — Progressive mid | €17,006 – €66,760 | ~24% → 42% | (181.19·y + 2,397)·y + 1,025.38 · where y = (z − 17,005)/10,000 |
| 4 — Flat 42% | €66,761 – €277,825 | 42% | 0.42·z − 10,911.92 |
| 5 — Top 45% | Over €277,825 | 45% | 0.45·z − 19,246.67 |
For Ehegattensplitting (married): income ÷ 2 → apply formula → result × 2.
| Contribution | Employee rate | Ceiling (West) |
|---|---|---|
| Rentenversicherung (pension) | 9.3% | €90,600/yr |
| Krankenversicherung (health) | ~8.2% | €66,150/yr |
| Pflegeversicherung (long-term care) | 1.7% (+0.6% childless) | €66,150/yr |
| Arbeitslosenversicherung (unemployment) | 1.3% | €90,600/yr |
Health rate = 7.3% statutory + ~0.9% average supplementary contribution (Zusatzbeitrag). Varies by insurer.
The basic tax-free allowance for 2025 is €12,096 per person. Income below this is entirely exempt. For married couples using Ehegattensplitting, the effective allowance is €24,192 total.
The Solidarity Surcharge (5.5% of income tax) was originally introduced to fund German reunification. Since 2021 it was abolished for roughly 90% of taxpayers. It only applies if your income tax exceeds ~€18,130 (singles) / ~€36,260 (couples). A gliding phase-in applies just above the threshold.
Married couples and registered civil partnerships may split their combined income for tax purposes. The total income is divided by 2, the tax formula is applied, and the result is multiplied by 2. This reduces tax when one spouse earns significantly more than the other, because it avoids the steep progressive rate on a single high income.
Germany's tax law uses a continuous mathematical formula (§32a EStG) to avoid "bracket jumps" — sudden increases in tax for tiny income increases. The formula produces a smooth, continuously rising effective tax rate from 14% at the bottom of Zone 2 to 42% at Zone 4.
