Calculate the sand quantity needed (m³ and tons) based on area, thickness and sand type — with a margin and price estimate.
| Step | Formula |
|---|---|
| Volume | Area × Thickness |
| With margin | Volume × (1 + margin % / 100) |
| Weight | Volume × density (kg/m³) ÷ 1000 |
Density depends on sand type and moisture — values are indicative; the supplier can give a more exact density for a specific batch.
10% is standard — it covers compaction, spillage and transport losses. For more complex work (e.g. slopes), 15–20% is recommended.
Quarry or washed sand with a gravel admixture is most commonly used. Fine sand is more often used for plastering or sandboxes.
m³ = tons ÷ (density kg/m³ ÷ 1000). E.g. 1.6 t / 1.6 t/m³ = 1 m³ of quarry sand.
