Calculate an indicative monthly leasing payment based on the car's price, down payment, term and residual value.
| Step | Formula |
|---|---|
| Financed amount | price − down payment |
| Depreciation portion/mo. | (financed amount − residual value) ÷ term (months) |
| Interest portion/mo. | (financed amount + residual value) × (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 2) |
| Monthly payment | depreciation portion + interest portion |
This is a standard indicative leasing calculation formula (similar to the one used in most leasing calculators). The actual offer from a leasing company may differ — insurance, a contract fee and other commissions may apply additionally.
It's the car's projected value at the end of the leasing term, which you can pay to acquire ownership of the car or return it to the leasing company.
With leasing, ownership of the car remains with the leasing company (or financier) until the end of the contract. With a loan, the buyer becomes the owner immediately, and the car is often pledged as collateral.
Yes, a higher residual value means less depreciation over the term, so the monthly payment is lower — but at the end of the term you'll need to pay a larger final amount or refinance.
