| Situation | Formel | Example ($1,100) |
|---|---|---|
| Add GST to a price | price × 1.1 | $1,000 + $100 GST = $1,100 |
| Extract GST from a total | total ÷ 11 | $1,100 ÷ 11 = $100 GST |
| Price before GST | total ÷ 1.1 | $1,100 ÷ 1.1 = $1,000 |
GST is a value-added tax collected by the ATO. Businesses registered for GST charge it on taxable supplies, claim credits on purchases, and report the difference on the BAS.
| Turnover (annual) | GST requirement |
|---|---|
| Under $75,000 | Voluntary registration only |
| $75,000 or more | Mandatory registration |
| $150,000 or more (non-profit) | Mandatory registration |
| Taxi / ride-sourcing (any turnover) | Mandatory registration |
A valid ABN is required before you can register for GST. Most small businesses lodge GST quarterly through their BAS.
GST is a flat 10% on most goods and services. Some supplies are GST-free (basic food, exports, some medical and education services) and some are input-taxed (residential rent, financial services). GST is not a tax on your profit — you collect it on behalf of the ATO and remit the net amount.
Because GST-inclusive prices are 110% of the pre-GST price. If the total is $1,100, the pre-GST price is $1,000 and the GST is $100 — exactly one eleventh of the total. So: GST = total ÷ 11.
$75,000 annual GST turnover for most businesses, $150,000 for non-profits. Ride-sourcing and taxi drivers must register regardless of turnover. If you register voluntarily you must stay registered for at least 12 months.
When you buy business supplies, the GST in the price becomes an input tax credit that offsets the GST you collected on sales. You report sales and credits on the BAS — if credits exceed GST collected, the ATO refunds the difference.
G1 = total sales, G2 = export sales, G3 = other GST-free sales, G10 = capital purchase credits, G11 = non-capital purchase credits. Net GST (label G) is GST collected on taxable sales minus total credits. Our BAS calculator works through it step by step.
